"... not merely Morris dancers. [We are] fifth columnists, defending English eccentricity from within - heroes of the ancient and anomalous, in the citadel of the bland"

(The Times, June 2007)

WOW!!  Well, I guess it takes all sorts...

SO...why do WE do it..?

Well, loads of reasons, actually!

Let’s start with the fact that, YES, it’s not mainstream and it’s not considered ‘cool’. GREAT! Who wants to be mainstream, anyway?!

Then there’s the fact that it’s fun and it’s really good exercise. So don’t go wasting your money on a gym subscription; if you join us, you won’t even notice you’re getting fit and you’ll feel like you’ve earned the pint afterwards.

Then, of course, there’s the social side of things. We always seem to be doing something, whether it’s just sitting around drinking tea or beer and talking. Or having a meal together or going on holidays, Morris or otherwise!

What else? Oh yes, there’s the satisfaction of knowing you’ve just danced a dance that looked good or just mastered a tune that’s stumped you until now…that happens once in a while. Some people enjoy the fact that they’re ensuring that an ancient English custom lives on; others that it’s a great way of exploring the pubs in their local area and getting to know other parts of the country that they wouldn’t have visited otherwise. Others just like the chance to sit outside a country pub on a beautiful summer’s evening enjoying the company of other like-minded people and enjoying the traditional ‘ music session’ that tends to end our dance-outs, where our musicians’ itchy fingers can let rip. Reckon that’s enough reasons, don’t you?

So…fancy having a go yourself? Now’s your chance!

Why not come along to one of our Beginners’ Workshops at the beginning of our practice season? You’ll be guided through the basic steps and are guaranteed to have a laugh. You might even fancy coming to our local pub with us afterwards for a chat, a drink and some music!

If you can’t wait that long or you've missed them, either get in touch via this website (see Contacts) or approach one of our team at any one of our dance-out events! You might even find some ‘have-a-go-with-HuMP’ sessions at your local village fete!
